Montauk Sofa Handmade in Montreal

It was 1995 when a young entrepreneur, Tim Zyto, created the first Montauk Sofa. Tim had grown up steeped in the old world tradition of sofa making. His father was the owner of Biltmore Chesterfield, a successful, well respected furniture maker, who sold to retailers across Canada. The original Montauk Sofa store opened in Montreal on a somewhat seedy patch of St. Laurent Boulevard, an iconic cultural corridor fondly referred to as the Main. Zyto brought in Danny Chartier, as head designer and executive manager and together they made up the yin and yang of what is today recognized as ...

CALGARY: CANADA’S NEXT BIG DESIGN CITY?

I left Calgary in 2008 to work, live and learn in Toronto. When I returned in 2012 with my degree in interior design, I could not believe my eyes. In just four  years, it seemed, Calgary had been transformed from lifeless to lively. Its tremendous growth has resulted in an increasingly vibrant metropolis that is brimming with award-winning restaurants, trendy coffee shops and packed bars. But what has interested me most about Calgary’s metamorphosis is the city’s development in the fields of art, architecture, urban planning and design. While such cities as Dubai and Shanghai sit on the international forefront for ...

GASTOWN: Montauk a tale of two visions

By Kelsey Klassen – WE Vancouver Photo: Rob Newell It’s a quiet fall morning in Gastown. That Vancouver light — so grey and all-revealing — travels leisurely down through ceiling-high warehouse windows to glisten off the polished concrete below. Under its steely glare, the Montauk showroom shows no signs of the wild night it just had. Having quickly become one of design week’s annual blow-outs, Montauk’s third annual “Crazy Little Party” on Sept. 21 saw silver foxes jumping on couches (Prosecco and mini Yorkshire puddings in hand), and friends air-kissing hello only to lose each other in a sea of ...
